About
The theme of "Breaking the Cocoon" explores the complex dynamics of human growth and alienation, examining how individuals evolve through various stages of learning, shaping both the positive and negative aspects of their personalities. This transformative process propels individuals from one social stratum to another. The metaphorical journey is divided into four stages, represented by animals—sheep, cat, monkey, and lion. Each animal embodies unique characteristics, reflecting their status and wisdom within the laws of the jungle.
Just as a caterpillar's metamorphosis into a butterfly symbolizes the shedding of an old self and the emergence of new freedom, this journey also signifies liberation from the constraints of social norms. It heralds a celebration of individuality and an elevation to a higher state of being, fully embracing one's inner essence.
Breaking out of the cocoon speaks not only to the growth of children but also to workplace pressures, where people often find themselves trapped in relentless work and stress. The artwork draws inspiration from towering skyscrapers and ubiquitous keyboards, capturing the essence of modern work culture and highlighting its dehumanizing effects.
In this context, the metaphorical "cocoon" becomes synonymous with the suffocating routines and demands of the professional world. Many find themselves sacrificing personal life and well-being in the pursuit of economic gain, effectively imprisoning themselves within the walls of their careers.
The shapes and forms in the artwork are heavily influenced by architectural elements, symbolizing the rigid structures and constraints of the corporate environment.
In the sheep stage, individuals exhibit innocence and vulnerability, reflecting their early experiences. Like timid sheep navigating the jungle, people in this stage are learning the basics of survival and social interaction.
The monkey stage signifies a period of increased intelligence and adaptability. Like monkeys swinging between branches, individuals in this stage demonstrate agility in learning, problem-solving, and embracing change.
The lion stage represents the pinnacle of maturity and leadership. Strong and confident, the lion symbolizes individuals who command their environment, exhibiting strength, wisdom, and a sense of responsibility.
Wool as a foundational fabric represents the "sheep" stage, showcasing the ignorance and vulnerability of early human years. Meanwhile, elements of animals like cats, monkeys, and lions symbolize different stages of growth—cats representing independence and curiosity, monkeys symbolizing intelligence and adaptability, and lions embodying leadership and maturity. Through the integration of these animal elements, my work successfully presents the diversity and complexity of the human growth process.
Moreover, my choice to extract colors from these animals enhances the coherence and symbolism of the artwork. By combining the symbolic meanings of human growth with animals, and through the selection of fabrics and the use of color, I vividly depict the complexity and diversity of the growth process.
"Breaking the Cocoon" encapsulates the multifaceted journey of human growth and alienation. It delves into the stages of transformation, utilizing animal symbolism to elucidate the evolving nature of individuals. Simultaneously, it exposes the pitfalls of the dynamic imbalance between work and life, warning against an overemphasis on professional pursuits at the expense of humanity.
