About

Madelaine White is a London-based knitwear and print designer, inspired by subtle expressions of vulnerability in youth subcultures, such as punk, rather than their overt rebellion. Her latest project, ‘in reverie’, used deadstock yarns and fabrics to produce a collection of delicate and intricate knitted textiles alongside whimsical prints, in order to portray the tenderness of the punk subculture, whilst maintaining its grungy edge. Although predominantly interested in menswear, her work is a collision of masculinity and femininity, inclusive of both gender and sizing.

in reverie. volume one.

my graduate collection, ‘in reverie’, is inspired by my ever-present childhood desire to escape the limiting familiarity of small-town yorkshire, in pursuit of the vast possibilities offered by the vibrant allure of london. upon reading ‘england’s dreaming’ by jon savage, i felt an affiliation to the punk movement of the late seventies, which saw many flock to the big smoke, chasing personal liberation. however, rather than focusing on punk’s overt rebellion- i took inspiration from the subtle expressions of vulnerability, often concealed by a facade of aggression- contradicting the notion of punk as a force of chaos, but rather as a movement pioneering a desire for better. using mostly deadstock yarns and fabrics, i created a collection of delicate and intricate knitted textiles, alongside whimsical prints and bright colours, portraying the tenderness of punk, whilst maintaining its grungy edge. ‘in reverie’ is a collision of masculinity and femininity- inclusive of both gender and sizing, which is very important to my own ideology and reflective of my own understanding of ‘punk’. despite exploring countless cities in search of creative fuel, i find comfort in my greatest influence, my yorkshire origins. I suppose hindsight is a beautiful thing.
