About
Mirl van Sorge is a versatile artist whose practice, developed at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK), is rooted in printmaking and expanded into audiovisual work. Her expertise spans intaglio, relief, and planographic printing techniques, including engraving, etching, lithography, and screen printing, alongside advanced digital printing and graphic design. Mirl’s work also incorporates video production, cinematic essays, and short documentaries. Central to her practice is exploring various storytelling techniques, often with a journalistic approach that addresses socio-political topics and history. Language plays a crucial role, either supporting the visual work or becoming part of it.
Silent Impressions contains a three-part artistic documentary and a manuscript written by machine instead of hand. The films each explore a distinct aspect of convent life: the role of women in the Church, the preservation of sacred texts, and the personal decision to become a nun. Silent Impressions examines the role of the contemporary nun, one who quietly resists outdated narratives. The manuscript explores the disappearance of scriptoria following the rise of the printing press, a paradigm shift echoed today in the digital revolution. This resounds as a postmodern echo of the medieval nun in a digital arm. Silent Impressions ultimately presents two timelines that reflect one another: past and future, preservation and reinvention.
