About

Franka Lenferink, born in Germany, is a product designer with a strong focus on sustainable design. She completed her Bachelor’s degree at the HAWK University of Applied Sciences and Arts and went on to earn her Master’s degree at the Hochschule Düsseldorf, Peter Behrens School of Arts. Throughout her academic journey, she has developed a clear emphasis on sustainable and innovative design approaches and development of new, eco-friendly materials. Her design philosophy prioritizes functionality, not only in service of people, but also in harmony with the environment. She views design as a powerful medium to address social and ecological issues, and as a way to make these topics visible through thoughtful, well-crafted concepts and products.

The growing fashion industry is leading to a massive environmental burden due to textile waste, of which only about 1 % is used for textile-to-textile recycling. Innovative approaches to the reuse of textile fibers are urgently needed to conserve resources and reduce environmental impact. In my master‘s thesis „Fabricated Futures. Potentials of Textile Transformations“ I developed Texterra. An innovative material made from textile fibers and a natural binder based on corn starch. Texterra resembles artificial leather at a thin material thickness and plastic at a thicker material thickness. The fiber material can be processed through various manufacturing processes such as molding, laser cutting, or extrusion. Thus offering a wide range of applications in the design field.
