Marking Home is a hands-on toolkit inspired by the traditional Batak art of the Gorga Pattern in Indonesia, developed to explore themes of identity and memory. This project started from the interest in how the pattern has transformed, from something that’s sacred, carved in traditional homes, into an expressive art form that continues to carry a sense of belonging even for those who have migrated. The toolkit consisted of a packaging that was created manually with letterpress, inspired by the handcrafted nature of Gorga and reflecting on their different level of surfaces. A publication was also included, tracing the history of the pattern that also features conversations with migrants in different parts of the world.
