I use design as a tool for social change. My work goes beyond creating aesthetically pleasing spaces—I leverage architecture as a medium to address pressing social issues and provoke meaningful conversations. Whether through sustainable design, community-centered projects, or conceptual works that challenge the status quo, my aim is to inspire action and raise awareness on topics that matter.
Set in Malaysia, The Kopitiam Festival seeks to address the challenges of urbanisation and gentrification by highlighting the social and historical significance of kopitiams – traditional coffee shops that serve as cherished community hubs. The annual festival aims to raise awareness and advocate for their preservation. Through a series of targeted activities, the festival will celebrate the diverse identities, narratives, and culinary traditions embedded within kopitiams. By showcasing their architectural and social heritage, the festival seeks to counter the homogenising effects of urban development and foster a sense of unity among kopitiam owners, patrons, and supporters. Extending beyond mere celebration, the festival aspires to spur action, influence policy decisions, and inspire similar initiatives across the nation. Ultimately, The Kopitiam Festival strives to ensure the continued existence of kopitiams as vibrant community centers across Malaysia.
