Daisy Brimble is a London based jewellery designer whose practice is rooted in material exploration. Working instinctively and responding intuitively to the properties of materials, Daisy works iteratively, often taking to the bench in the early design stages to allow space for unrestricted experimentation. Whilst her work aims to push the boundaries of material use and form, wearability remains a central principle in her design process.
‘The Humble Needle’ is my exploration into the unfamiliar seamstress world that I am inherently connected to through my Grandmother, Auntie, and Sister. Feeling alienated within my legacy led me to materially investigate the sewing needle. Evocative of the ‘presence of women’ and their invisible and silent labour, the needle holds a strong narrative independently. Using multiple needles in repetitive forms is explored as a mirroring to the repetitive motion of the sewing stitch and the repetitive work that the needle represents. Utilising the pre-existing elements of the needle is important, however the visual transformation of the needle is a notion to breaking traditions, whilst navigating my own position in my lineage. Whilst this collection serves as a statement against traditions, the addition of gemstones elevates the unvalued sewing needle, therefore honouring my lineage by celebrating the humble tool vital in their craft.
