Hi! I'm a Canadian textile artist/designer/researcher. My work is technically driven, making use of both hand and industrial weaving techniques to explore the relationships of colour, weave binding, material, and image.
This body of work explores the materiality of colour in woven cloth and its power to evoke emotional responses through imagery. Using photographs of landscapes and objects as source material, the work translates personal experience into woven form, while intentionally ambiguous compositions invite open interpretation. My inspiration for this research was sparked by the beautiful colour effects I’d see on the backs of clothing tags. While these surfaces are only a byproduct of another weaving technique called 'brocade', I wondered what would happen if I found a way to take control of these loose, free-floating threads. What would an image look like if it were woven with these painterly surface qualities?
