Inspired by minimal aesthetics and Japanese philosophy, Cheng’s creations reflect a refined and delicate simplicity. By thoughtfully incorporating conceptual ideas into his work, he reimagines the relationship between art, space, and viewer. He creates thought-provoking works that offer new perspectives, inspire reflection and invite audiences to engage on both intellectual and emotional levels.
Clock is a conceptual installation that utilizes ceramic and mechanical parts to create a unique timepiece. Instead of conventional time measurement, it employs the pulse intervals of human heartbeats, inviting viewers to experience time through an intrinsic rhythm. The design features a pendulum mechanism with a heart-shaped bob, emphasizing the connection between life and time. Artist statement: A second is accepted as the standard unit of time, yet its duration is an arbitrary construct. Under standardised time, our perception of time becomes alienated. Clock uses the pulse intervals of human heartbeats as a unique temporal unit, inviting the audience to experience time through an intrinsic rhythm and presence.
