My name is Malin and I have a Bachelor degree in Textile Design from The Swedish School of Textiles. With a three year academic background within Environmental engineering from Lund University, I have a technical understanding and a sustainability perspective that I bring into my design. My ambition is to be a designer who challenges our conception of textiles and pushes the field forward in terms of form, function, color and material, but also regarding sustainability.
This bachelor degree project in textile design explores the making of dynamic, changeable jacquard woven interior textiles with an inherent three dimensional structure that self-forms. The technique employed is based on monomateriality, i.e. no mix of yarns or technical yarns are required for the textile to function. Despite this, it results in a steady, elastic pleated structure. In this project it is the weaving technique that is the key element! But why pleats for interior textiles, you may ask yourself. The application of pleats might be more common in garment design, however this project suggests that it can be an expressive and playful ingredient in interior textiles. Additionally, the ability to change form and appearance makes the textile versatile and, by extension, multifunctional. Like this it turns into a piece of design that will never truly loose its purpose, rather its purpose will be rediscovered and reinvented time and time again according to your needs.
